The Lviv State Art Gallery Part 1
The pride of the one of the oldest cities in Ukraine is the Lviv State Art gallery, which is justly regarded as one of the richest art treasures of our country. The vast collection of the gallery includes over 35 thousand precious items, among which there are genuine masterpieces by world-famous artists. The works of art collected here enable one to become broadly familiar with the achievements of artistic culture of various lands, beginning with the XIV century.
The gallery was founded by the city magistracy in 1907 as the People Gallery of the City Lviv. Its basic collection consisted of 300 works of Western-European art acquired by the Lviv magistracy from the wealthy landlord and collector Y. Yakovych. The collection of the gallery grew rather slowly on the modest sums allocated by the magistracy and by private donors. It was the museum for the minority - actually, a mere repository for works of art, for example, in 1936 the number of visitors was only 1,645 (60 excursions were conducted).
It began a true centre of artistic culture and aesthetic education after World War II. Its collection was considerably enriched. Nearly 1,000 works of art from 20 countries of the world arc now regularly displayed in the gallery halls.
The exposition is arranged accordingly to the historical and chronological principle and gives an idea of the complex process of the development of world art from the XIV century up to our days, of individual styles and trends of fine art in Europe and in this century.
