Stanislav Lyudkevytch was a famous Ukrainian composer, pedagogue, music expert, public figure and people artist. He was born on the 24th of December 1879 in the town of Yaroslav (now lies on the territory of Poland) in the family of a teacher. After finishing the gymnasium, he entered the philological department of the Lviv university and studied there from 1898 till 1901. Being greatly interested in music, he studied himself the history of composition and the history of music. He turned out to be a gifted musician, having an excellent ear for music. As a philologist he was also interested in folklore. In 1906-07, together with O.Rozdolskyj, he made a collection of Galicia-Rus folk melodies, proving to be both an excellent folklorist and musician. This collection became a valid contribution into Ukrainian musical folklore. He had been collecting folk songs in Podillia and Holm (both Ukrainian territories under the Austrian rule) for 10 years and published them in 1916. In 1907 he went to study music in Vienna at the musical faculty of its university. He soon supported his thesis there. Meanwhile he participated in organizing the Higher Musical Institute named after M.Lysenko in Lviv.

His musical heritage is rich. Lyudkevych is known to set on music the best poetical works by T. Shevchenko, I.Franko, M. Shashkevytch, M.Rylsky. In his work he paid much attention to composing choral music and cantatas. In fact he worked in different genres, but his favourite were the vocal and symphonic ones. His best symphonic cantatas are "The Testament" to the words by T.Shevchenko and "The Farm Hand" ("Naimyt") to the words by I.Franko. In his musical pieces S. Lyudkevych created dramatic personages and the ideas of struggle with the oppressors. He wrote only one, but very expressive opera, based on Ukrainian folklore, "Dovbush".

For many years he worked in the Lviv conservatoire, paying much attention to bringing up young musicians, leading scientific work in the field of musical art and inquiring into both the history and theory of musical art. He died in Lviv in 1979 at the age of 100 and as other outstanding Lvivites was buried in Lychakiv cemetery.
