The Pharmacy Museum

We are at the entrance of the Pharmacy Museum located at the corner of Stauropegiyska and Drukarska Streets. This building was constructed in the 17th century. On the facade of the building you can see two bas-reliefs. They depict Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine, and his daughter Hygiene, the Greek goddess of health. And now let's enter the museum and get acquainted with some of its exhibits.
Lviv pharmacists were first mentioned in the chronicles in the 13th century. Constance, the wife of prince Leo, founded a hospital and a pharmacy at the Monastery of the Dominicans. The pharmacy in this building was set up in 1735 by a military pharmacist Natorp. The Museum was opened in 1966. It has more than 2.000 items, including vessels, scales, instruments and manuscripts . The museum has several rooms. The first room is called the trade hall. You can buy medicine here. The walls of the room are lined with tall built-in closets. Some of the glass-ware have various emblems, for example a star, a crown, an eagle and others. They belonged to different pharmacies with the original names such as "Under the Star", "Under the Crown" and others. The ceiling of the trade hall was painted at the beginning of the 19th century by Viennese masters. You can see four eternal elements with the inscriptions in Latin: "Aqua" (Water), "Ignis" (Fire), "Terra" (Earth) and "Aer" (Air).
The most attractive exhibit in the trade hall is the unique scales of the 18th century. You can see two bronze figures of Aesculapius and Hygies. There is also the symbol of medicine - a bowl and a snake, which is more than 4.000 years old. Here you can also see one of the earliest samples of the oil lamp made in the middle of the 19th century. By the way, the oil lamp was first made in Lviv.
The Pharmacy Museum has several other rooms, for example an office-room of the former pharmacy owner, a pharmacy laboratory, a former cook-room and basements.
