Khmelnytsky, Bohdan (Fedir) Zinovii [Xmel’nyc’kyj], b ca 1595–6, d 6 August 1657 in Chyhyryn. Hetman of the Zaporozhian Host from 1648 to 1657, founder of the Hetman state (1648–1782). (Portrait: Bohdan Khmelnytsky.) By birth he belonged to the Ukrainian lesser nobility and bore the Massalski, and later the Abdank, coat of arms. His father, Mykhailo Khmelnytsky, served as an officer under the Polish crown hetman Stanislaw Zolkiewski and his mother, according to some sources, was of Cossack descent. Khmelnytsky's place of birth has not been determined for certain.

Danylo Romanovych [Danylo Romanovyc], 1201–64. Prince of Volhynia and Galicia (see Principality of Galicia-Volhynia), king of Rus' (from 1253). After the death of his father, Prince Roman Mstyslavych, in 1205, unrest among the boyars forced Danylo to take refuge at the Hungarian court, and later, with his mother and brother, Vasylko Romanovych, in small principalities in Volhynia. Following a long struggle with neighboring princes and Galician boyars (1219–27) Danylo unified Volhynia.

Hrushevsky, Mykhailo [Hrusevs’kyj, Myxajlo], b 29 September 1866 in Kholm, d 25 November 1934 in Kislovodsk, North Caucasus krai, RSFSR. The most distinguished Ukrainian historian; principal organizer of Ukrainian scholarship, prominent civic and political leader, publicist, and writer; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1894, the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences from 1923, and the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1929. Hrushevsky's father, Serhii, was a Slavist and pedagogue.

Barvinsky, Oleksander [Barvins'kyj], b 8 June 1847 in Shliakhtyntsi, Ternopil county, Galicia, d 25 December 1926 in Lviv. Noted pedagogue, historian, and civic and political leader. He began to work in civic organizations, especially in the Lviv Hromada (see Hromadas), as a young man. He became a secondary school teacher at the gymnasium in Berezhany in 1868 and later in Ternopil. From 1888 he taught at the Lviv teachers' seminary. From 1891 to 1907 he served as a deputy to the parliament in Vienna and to the Galician diet (1894–1904) (see Diet, provincial).

Hnatiuk, Volodymyr [Hnatjuk], b 9 May 1871 in Velesniv, Buchach county, Galicia, d 6 October 1926 in Lviv. Noted Slavic ethnographer, literary scholar, translator, journalist, and community figure in Western Ukraine; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (NTSh) in Lviv from 1899, the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg from 1902, the Czechoslovak Folklore Society in Prague from 1905, the Society for Austrian Folk Art in Vienna, the Folklore Fellows in Helsinki, and the VUAN and the Ethnographic Society in Kyiv from 1924.

Kostelnyk, Havryil [Kostel’nyk, Havryjil], b 1886 in Ruski Krstur, Bačka region, Serbia, d 20 September 1948 in Lviv. Priest, writer, journalist, philosopher, and theologian. He studied philosophy and theology at Zagreb University, Lviv University, and Fribourg University (PH D 1913). Ordained in 1913, after the First World War he moved to Lviv, where he was a professor of theology and philosophy at the Greek Catholic Theological Seminary in Lviv (1920–8) and the Greek Catholic Theological Academy (1928–30). He also edited the religious journal Nyva (1922–32).

Anhelovych, Antin [Anhelovyč], b 14 April 1756 in the village of Hryniv, Bibrka county, Galicia, d 9 August 1814 in Lviv. Greek Catholic metropolitan of Lviv. Anhelovych studied at the Barbareum and in 1793 became the first rector of the Greek Catholic Theological Seminary in Lviv. In 1794 he became professor of dogma and in 1796 rector of Lviv University. In 1795 he was appointed bishop of Peremyshl; in 1798, administrator of the Lviv eparchy; in 1804, administrator of the Kholm eparchy; and in 1805, administrator of both the Lviv and Kholm eparchies.

Fedorovych (Fedorov), Ivan [Fedorovyc], b ca 1525, d 16 December 1583 in Lviv. Fedorovych (also known as Khvedorovych or Khodorovych) was the founder of book printing and book publishing in Russia and Ukraine. He was deacon of Saint Nicholas Gostunsky Church in Moscow, where, from 1553, he oversaw the construction of a printing house commissioned by Tsar Ivan IV. In 1564–5 Fedorovych and the Belarusian P. Mstsislavets published in Moscow several liturgical works in Church Slavonic.

Lviv gave the world quite few scientists. One of them, Stefan Banach, became one of the most important figures in mathematics of the 20th century. He was a cofounder of the best mathematical journals "Studia Mathematica" . (1892--1945) - Mathematician, born in Krakow, Poland but lived and died in Lviv, He is regarded as one of the founders of functional analysis, and he founded an important school of Polish mathematicians. Made major contributions to the theory of topological vector spaces. In addition, he contributed to measure theory, integration, and orthogonal series.

The fans of science fiction know Stanislaw Lem as one of the best sci-fi authors. One of the world's most widely read science fiction writers. His works include: The Chain of Chance, One Human Minute, The Cyberiad and much, much more... Lem's books were translated into thirty six languages with over twenty seven million copies. Lem is best known to English readers for his 1961 novel Solaris, on which Russian film maker Andrei Tarkovsky based his 1971 film. He is a creator of the character of the Universe explorer Ioan Tihiy.

Olena Kulchytska entered the history of Ukrainian art as a resourceful artist — a painter, decorator and graphic art master. She enriched the etching, wood carving and lino engraving techniques and became the pioneer of modern printing graphic art.

Stanislav Lyudkevytch was a famous Ukrainian composer, pedagogue, music expert, public figure and people artist. He was born on the 24th of December 1879 in the town of Yaroslav (now lies on the territory of Poland) in the family of a teacher. After finishing the gymnasium, he entered the philological department of the Lviv university and studied there from 1898 till 1901. Being greatly interested in music, he studied himself the history of composition and the history of music. He turned out to be a gifted musician, having an excellent ear for music.

The name of this real literary genius is most tightly connected with Lviv. The Lviv State University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, proudly bears the name of Ivan Franko. Streets, squares, theatres, cinema-halls, schools and even towns and villages are named after him either.

Salomea Krushelnytska was a world famous singer with lyric-dramatic soprano of incomparable beauty, whose range of nearly three octaves was a unique phenomenon in the world vocal art. The greatest theatres and concert halls of the world tried to secure a contract with her. The celebrated conductors, such as Arturo Toscanini, Leopoldo Mugnione, Ferrero and others, rivalled for the honour to conduct the performances, in which she participated.
